According to reports, Greek wine production is expected to drop by 30% in 2023, mainly due to the epidemic of downy mildew.
Yiannis Voyatzis, leader of the Hellenic Winemakers Association, disclosed the forecast during discussions with the Minister of Agricultural Production and Food, Lefteris Avgenakis. Voyatzis highlighted the key role of Greek wine as a cultural ambassador, making a significant contribution to the local economy and tourism.
The Greek wine production sector is largely made up of numerous family-run businesses that prioritize quality-focused practices over intensive farming methods. The Greek wine industry thrives on its diverse indigenous varieties, with nearly 1,400 wineries covering approximately 60,000 hectares.
The industry supports approximately 160,000 families engaged in vineyard cultivation, further underlining the integral role of Greek wine in the country’s socio-economic fabric.
