The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say a small plane has crashed south of Calgary, killing a female pilot.
Mounties said it was around 7:30 p.m. They were alerted Monday that a plane had crashed in an open field northeast of Claresholm Airport, 130 kilometers south of Calgary.
“The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, emergency medical services and firefighters arrived and located the small aircraft,” the RCMP said in a release Tuesday.
“The single occupant, a 24-year-old female resident of London, Ontario, was pronounced dead at the scene.”
A property owner at the crash site called the RCMP. “Her husband went out in a 4WD to see if he could help, but there was nothing he could do,” the corporal said. Gina Slaney.
The RCMP said the matter has now been referred to Transport Canada as the Canadian Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
The TSB confirmed on its website that it had dispatched a team to investigate the crash of a privately registered Cessna 152 near Klesholm.
“The Transportation Safety Board will gather information and evaluate the incident,” the group said on its website.
