The refreshed SUV will show its tough side at the IAA Mobility trade fair in Munich.
The updated 2024 BMW X5 debuted earlier this year and, like its predecessor, is also available in an armored version. The new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is expected to debut in September at the 2023 Munich Motor Show. But we now have details on the bulletproof SUV.
A key aspect of this particular BMW is that it is indistinguishable from other X5s. Indeed, the twin M cross members in the front kidney grille, the M mirror caps in high-gloss black, the high-gloss Shadowline BMW Individual roof rails and the two pairs of typical exhaust pipes all lend a sporty appearance. M exhaust system. From this aspect, stealth is the first line of defense of X5 Protection VR6.
Beneath the familiar skin, you’ll find molded high-strength steel panels in the door, sideframe, roof and bulkhead areas shaped to fit the bodywork. There’s also an armored boot divider and an aluminum underbody shrapnel shield. If a bullet or shrapnel penetrates the tank, a special casing seals the puncture to prevent leaks. The X5 Protection VR6 meets VPAM ballistic requirements, but buyers can also opt for optional underbody armor and additional roof armor for even more protection.
The rest is pretty much the standard 2024 BMW X5 in M60i xDrive trim, meaning a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 handles the power under the hood, mated to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system producing 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft torque. BMW doesn’t share the X5 Protection VR6’s weight, though the extra mass does have an impact on performance.
Acceleration from the M60i’s 4.2 seconds to 62 mph (100 km/h) takes just 5.9 seconds. That matches the performance of the previous Armored X5, which had a top speed of 131 mph. However, the suspension and braking system were retuned to handle the heavy armor.
Despite its solid construction, drivers and passengers will find the new X5’s 14.9-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch driver’s display equipped with a luxurious interior. BMW’s four-zone climate control is standard, as are Sensafin leather-wrapped sports seats. You won’t find seating for five, though; BMW says the X5 Protection VR6 is a dedicated four-seater “for comfort and safety.”
Other unique features of the Protection VR6 include an intercom system for communicating with those outside, optional LED strobes in the radiator grille, rear strobes, roof strobes with horn system and car with digital radio add-on receiver top antenna. BMW also offers a special driver mentoring program that provides “tactical behavior training”.
BMW has a dedicated section of its X5 manufacturing plant in Spartanburg, North Carolina, to produce the armored SUV. Pricing information is not yet known, but first deliveries should begin in February 2024.
